THE BIGGER PICTURE
It will be Mexico’s first appearance at the venue since 2022, when they faced Suriname in the Nations League. The clash will also be the fifth time the national team plays in Torreón, a city that first welcomed the in 2010, coincidentally also under manager Javier Aguirre, in a World Cup warm-up against North Korea.
This will only be the third friendly ever staged by Mexico at the TSM and the second against a South American opponent. The previous one came in 2011 versus Brazil, a memorable night that doubled as Oswaldo Sánchez’s farewell from international football.

WHAT IVAR SISNIEGA SAID
According to Ivar Sisniega, Mexico's Director of National Teams, scheduling Uruguay reflects Aguirre’s plan to measure Mexico against top competition in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
“The coach is looking for opponents that challenge the group and allow him to test players who could make the final roster. Sides like Ecuador, Colombia, and Uruguay are all among the world’s top 20 and have just completed tough qualifiers,” Sisniega explained.
He also highlighted Torreón’s facilities as a key factor in the decision:
“The TSM is impressive both as a stadium and as a training center. It was the best choice for this game, and it has the right conditions to even be considered as a World Cup base camp," he said.
